Sony Catalyst: The Best XAVC-S to MP4 Transcoder

Having tried a myriad of converters such as Tencoder, Editready and Handbrake, I only recently stumbled upon Sony’s Catalyst Suite of editing software which includes Catalyst Browse which allows for batch transcoding of XAVC-S and AVCHD files. Best of all the Catalyst Browse is completely free! If only I had discovered it sooner.

This is a great tool for users of Sony cameras such as the A7s, A7rIII, or the A6500 to convert the native XAVC-S to more editor friendly formats like MP4. Catalyst Browse function as a great resource to organize metadata, file management, move clips. It even includes a simple color correction tool to batch correct files.

Moreover, Catalyst Browse seems to be well optimized for Intel systems with full GPU utilization unlike Tencoder which was incredibly inefficient and produced sub-par results. While the result is not completely lossless, Catalyst produced files that was nearly identical to the original, all through a simple process without diving into different settings.
